self-assigned

Yesterday there was a march and gathering at Kiener Plaza to protest Arizona's immigration crackdown. I was off, but as a person interested in immigration policy in our country, I wanted to be there. So I went with a camera (albeit a point-and-shoot) around my neck and a notepad. I didn't march. I didn't cheer. I didn't hold a sign. I listened.

I am so sad about Arizona's new immigration laws. As someone who lived in that beautiful state for two years during graduate school, I'm very upset by this legislation. Guess what else? Teachers whose accents are too pronounced are being asked to step down by the Arizona Department of Education and ethnic studies departments are being attacked in terms of not being funded. Michel Martin, of NPR's Tell Me More fame, gave a beautiful and well-rounded speech last night at the end of her program that really made me think even more about this issue. I think you'll enjoy reading it too, Elie: http://www.npr.org/blogs/tellmemore/
