Thanks to former fellow Maneater Sarah Larimer, Miami has been wonderful. Once a Maneater, always a Maneater. Many thanks to Sarah, a gracious hostess!

missing maine, onto miami

As one student called us, fearless leaders. Photo by student Evan Allen

I've been scarce. I miss this blog. However, I've been tending to some craziness. Ever had an airline lose a bag with a lot of important stuff in it (like your passport a week before you need to leave the country)? It's been a week of phone calls, cheesy on-hold music and paperwork, paperwork, paperwork. I'm due to receive a replacement passport Friday afternoon. [Currently accepting all prayers, karma and general luck] And for all of you wondering how I could be so silly as to have a passport in my checked baggage, fair question. 1) I was traveling domestically and not paying particular attention to the whereabouts of my passport. 2) I stuck my passport in a file folder and kind of forgot about it while in Maine. Um, costly mistake. Learn from my lesson. Still waiting on my bags, Delta. Jump on it.

I depart for Ecuador and the Galápagos for another three weeks of student expeditions on Sunday. Tomorrow, I head to Miami to prepare for the trip. Again, I'm not certain how often I'll be able to update the blog while in Ecuador, if at all. I do promise to share several photos upon my return. Tonight, I'm thinking of the great experiences we had in Maine. Here are a few of my fun memories from the trip.

My cousin Craig lives in one of the coolest apartments in Manhattan, nestled in the heart of Washington Heights. His eye for design is so nice. He starts at FIT in the fall, where he'll be studying photography. Must be in our genes. In the meantime, I think he should get a show on HGTV. I'd be watching! Great to see you, cuz.

lower east side

Yesterday morning I woke to the sound of birds chirping and the heat of the sun streaming through two giant windows. I woke up in the Lower East Side and, much to my surprise, it was peaceful. New York City, you aren't so bad after all.

little cranberry island

Islesford, Little Cranberry Island

Playing catch up on several images from my time in Maine during my layover at JFK. I've posted several images from Cadillac Mountain, but this is the first image from Little Cranberry Island. It's a tiny island southeast of Mount Desert Island. To get there, we rode on a working mail boat that operates as a ferry. The ride takes about 40 minutes.

Ashley Bryan, a magical person and children's book illustrator, invited us into his home and shared his art with us (photos to come). After that, it didn't take long to get to know the rest of the island. The postmaster Joy had a handwritten sheet in the post office so the community could sign up for duties and chores for the Fourth of July potluck. Jane of Island Girl Seaglass makes beautiful jewelry and home decorations of worn sea glass and sells the creations from the hut next to her home. A man we met on the street invited us to see his attic after only a few minutes. He was on his way to the neighborhood house - the one wifi spot on the island where people sit inside and out with their laptops, some at picnic tables. When a car drove up behind me, it caught me by surprise. There aren't a lot of cars on the island and the roads are gravel and dirt. This place had community, and it welcomed us warmly.

happy fourth

After a satisfying day of parade and lobster race watching, we cooked a nice pasta dinner for the kids back at College of the Atlantic. Then we walked to the shore, found some flat rocks and enjoyed the fireworks. More photos to come. Happy Independence Day!

what i've been up to

I've been in Maine since June 26 co-leading a National Geographic Student Expedition with Mike Kautz. Sorry the blog has been a bit sparse. I've been putting more energy toward the program blog. (Oh yeah, and the 15 kids!) Check out some of their incredible work.

4 a.m. sunrise shoot at Sand Beach. The sun never rose. So I found fog, more fog, ropes, feathers and sand. Lots of sand.
