buena suerte, mi hermanito

My brother moved to Costa Rica yesterday. He jumped on a plane and flew to a country where he doesn't know much of anyone. He will study with a group of 21 students from around the United States for six months. They will take classes with native Costa Ricans, not dumbed down Spanish classes. I did the same program four years ago. It was fun, challenging and adventuresome. Good luck, my brother, good luck.

heads up?

I was sitting in the passengers seat of the car, framing an image of a window that reflected nearby buildings in downtown Clayton. I shot the frame a couple times, chimpped and then shot a couple more. In between those frames I saw this one. I didn't compose it, nor did I even realize the shutter was released. As I pulled it up in Photo Mechanic, I noticed that it appears there is a penny in the photo. Heads up? Odd. Well, I guess my camera found a better photo than the one I was trying to make. And maybe it's lucky ...

outtake

Found this snap on the same card as the point-and-shoot photographer. This is from a story "From Africa to a Place Called Home." It was my final project for college. I continue to work on it a few times a year, as time allows. I have hundreds of images to edit yet.

Ode to the P & S

Still missing the old point-and-shoot so I am posting this photo from a couple months back - just cleaned off the card. Now that's a true point-and-shoot photographer ;-)

R.I.P. A620

So I went to D.C. this weekend with my camera, but when I went to turn it on, it wouldn't turn on. It was an awful feeling. The snow and buildings were taunting me everywhere I went. My eyes exaggerated moments that my camera would have recorded. Being without a digital sucks. I did have a model of the Diana+. I took eight of the 12 shots on the roll. In a couple weeks perhaps I'll have those photos developed and scanned. Ah, forgive me. Life with digital photography makes this blog a possibility.

suerte

She will be taking a test to gain her citizenship today. She knows all the answers from George Washington to 435. My thoughts are with her.

traffic

In St. Louis we had a portion of a major highway shut down. My first three days back in the field I was up at the crack of dawn to cover the result - traffic (or, some days, the lack there of). I tried this different approach on day three, and it actually ran in the paper. I was surprised. And happy.

this ...

... is what happens when you start work so early in the day, that you get done at 2:30. I like to call this a streetside safari in St. Louis.

copia remnants

I'll miss Copia and it's sweet pulled pork lunch sandwich.

el arco y el hombre

It's kinda of like the Arch, and it's in downtown St. Louis too.
